A Cross-Cultural Celebration in Portugal: Megan and Karan’s Destination Wedding at Penha Longa Resort

Destination weddings are all about creating unforgettable experiences that reflect love, heritage, and culture and Megan and Karan’s wedding in Portugal was a perfect example. From 10th to 12th November 2025, friends and family from around the world gathered to celebrate this spectacular union at the iconic Penha Longa Resort, set amidst lush mountains, historic monasteries, and the timeless charm of Sintra and Lisbon.

Megan, of Italian English heritage, and Karan, of Indian descent, both based in Ghana, curated a wedding that honored their roots while celebrating their global community. Guests travelled from Ghana, England, Italy, Brazil, Dubai, and India, creating a vibrant multicultural gathering.

Day 1 – Welcome Lunch and Dinner: A Taste of Portugal

The celebrations began at Spices Restaurant, Penha Longa, with a warm and relaxed Welcome Lunch. Guests were treated to an international buffet featuring flavors from across Asia and beyond. A singer with an acoustic guitar performed Hindi and English songs, reflecting the couple’s multicultural journey and setting the tone for the weekend.

A dedicated wedding lounge offered hospitality services throughout the three days. Guests enjoyed amenities like steaming, hair & makeup, henna, massages, and a pop-up snack shop ensuring everyone felt pampered and ready for the festivities ahead.

In the evening, the “Welcome to Portugal” Dinner in the Coroa Ballroom immersed guests in Portuguese culture. Guests were greeted with roasted chestnuts and entertained by stilt walkers and jugglers inspired by Portugal’s iconic azulejo tiles. The ballroom dazzled with sweeping white and blue florals, celebrating Portugal’s tile artistry.

A local band serenaded attendees with Portuguese, Italian, and Spanish melodies, while Megan’s custom His & Hers cocktails added a personal touch. Interactive experiences, such as hand-painted Portuguese tiles and customized charm bracelets, created memorable keepsakes.

The evening evolved into two after-parties:

  • For the Young & Wild: LED décor, samba dancers, and a DJ on an elevated balcony in the Monastery Courtyard set the stage for a high-energy night.
  • For the Young at Heart: The Arches Room offered an intimate space with acoustic music, shisha, and cozy cocktails.

Guests moved seamlessly between the two parties, enjoying contrasting yet equally unforgettable experiences.

Day 2 – Western Ceremony and Sangeet

The Western Wedding Ceremony took place in the Arches Room of Penha Longa Monastery. Soft white florals, candlelit pathways, and a grand floral arch created a serene and romantic atmosphere. Megan walked down the aisle with her father, accompanied by a live string quartet, while her aunt officiated, and her grandmother served as flower girl, adding deeply personal touches.

After the ceremony, guests enjoyed a sprawling lunch featuring Italian and English-inspired décor with citrus accents. Special highlights included a live tiramisu cake station, gin bar, Sarti spritz station, and an audio phone book for recorded wishes.

The celebrations continued in the evening with the Sangeet at SUD Lisboa Hall, Lisbon. Overlooking the Tagus River and 25 de Abril Bridge, the venue was transformed with vibrant gemstone-inspired décor. Family and friends performed lively dances, while the Indian band Best Kept Secret delivered an electrifying performance. The emcee, DJ, and percussionist kept the energy alive late into the night.

Day 3 – Baraat, Hindu Ceremony, and Reception

The final day began with a traditional wedding lunch at Mercatto Restaurant, preparing guests for the Indian festivities ahead. Karan arrived in a vintage Rolls Royce for the lively Baraat, with the DJ and emcee keeping spirits high despite the rain.

The Hindu Ceremony was held at the UNESCO heritage site, Nuncio Garden, beautifully transformed into a “Garden of Pheras.” Traditional musicians performed on sitar, tabla, and flute, creating a magical atmosphere for the sacred vows.

The celebrations culminated at Casino Estoril with a reception themed “Under the Stars.” Guests enjoyed cocktails, an illusionist, a live sketch artist, elevated violin performances, dancers, and a stunning Portugal-themed wedding cake. Emotional speeches, a family-style curated dinner, and handcrafted cocktails created a night of pure elegance. The DJ kept the dance floor alive until the very end, ensuring a joyful farewell.
